Picnic under the windmill
by Carla Loots
Our wedding Windmill spins slowly, its blades moving like a heartbeat against the sky. Guests must time their putts just right, slipping the ball past the moving paddles – a moment of suspense that always draws laughter and applause.
Windmills have a fascinating history. For centuries they harnessed wind to grind grain or pump water, symbolising resourcefulness, adaptation, and working with nature’s forces. These are also qualities at the heart of a strong marriage—teamwork, timing, and shared purpose. In European folklore, windmills often represent good luck and the turning of life’s seasons, which makes them an apt metaphor for a couple stepping into a new phase of life together and serves as a gentle reminder that love too has seasons, and that each turn can be beautiful.
On our course, the windmill obstacle does more than offer a familiar challenge. Its slow rotation creates movement and draws the eye, acting as a kinetic centrepiece among the obstacles. It’s a place where guests cheer each other on and couples sneak a quick photo as the blades spin behind them.
Playing this hole is like a small parable. You wait, you watch, you choose your moment, and when you send the ball forward at just the right time, it sails through effortlessly. That’s the magic of marriage too: timing, patience, and joy in motion.
