Fairview's Goat Tower

by Carla Loots

Perhaps the most whimsical of all our obstacles is our miniature version of Fairview Wine and Cheese’s iconic Goat Tower. Goats are symbols of vitality and sure-footedness – qualities every couple needs as they navigate life’s slopes. The real Goat Tower, built in the 1980s, became famous for its playful herd who scampered up and down its corkscrew paths. We brought it to our course not only for its South African charm but because its shape tells a love story. The winding ramp is like a relationship’s journey: twists, climbs, and shared progress toward a common destination.

Creating an obstacle inspired by something close to home felt like bringing a piece of our own story into the weddings we host. Paarl, with its rolling vineyards and iconic landmarks, has shaped so many of our memories. When we chose to recreate Fairview’s famous Goat Tower, it wasn’t just because it’s a whimsical putt-putt challenge – it’s because it speaks of home, heritage and the playful spirit of the Cape Winelands. Designing it allowed us to share a slice of Paarl’s charm with couples and guests from all over, turning a local treasure into a centrepiece.

Every time a ball spirals down the tower, we’re reminded of where we started and why we love weaving local touches into our courses. This obstacle is more than a novelty; it’s a celebration of curiosity, courage and the joy of climbing higher together.
